Healthcare SEO is becoming healthcare AEO
Patients now ask AI the deciding questions, and healthcare is where answers get checked hardest. What carries over from SEO (readability, reviews, consistency), what doesn't (ranking-first content), and the three-move sequence for practices — and the agencies that hold their accounts.
For a decade, "healthcare SEO" meant one thing: rank the practice's pages for the conditions and treatments patients search. That work still matters — but it's no longer where the decision happens. Patients now ask AI engines the deciding questions directly, and the engines answer with names, not links.
What changes in a trust-critical category
Healthcare is exactly the kind of question people hesitate on. Our street-interview research found the public trusts AI most on checkable facts and least on consequential judgments — and "who should treat me" is as consequential as judgments get. So healthcare answers get checked: against reviews, against listings, against what a friend says. An AI recommendation that doesn't survive that checking doesn't convert.
In healthcare, the recommendation is the beginning of the patient's verification — not the end of their search.
What carries over from SEO — and what doesn't
Carries over: a readable site, accurate structured data, a healthy review base, consistent name-address-phone across the web. The engines read the same sources search always rewarded.
Doesn't carry over: ranking-first content strategy. Pages built to win keyword positions often say nothing an engine can quote when a patient asks a specific question — which insurer, which condition, referral or not, who exactly the clinician is. The engines assemble answers from sources that state checkable facts plainly, and they weight independent corroboration over anything the practice says about itself.
What healthcare AEO actually involves
Three moves, in order. First, measure: run the questions real patients ask — coverage, condition, credential questions, not just "best clinic near me" — and record who the engines name today. Second, fix legibility: make the practice's identity, services, insurers, and clinicians machine-readable and identical everywhere. Third, build corroboration for the specific questions that matter: the directories, professional listings, and third-party mentions that let an engine say a name with confidence.
For agencies holding healthcare accounts
This is retention-critical: your healthcare clients will hear about AI visibility this year — from a patient who mentions ChatGPT sent them, or from a competitor's pitch. The agencies that get ahead of that conversation with a measured baseline keep the account and grow the retainer. The ones that wait explain themselves later.
